Following the success of Victory of the Whale (2020), Montegrappa proudly presents the latest chapter in its Solidarity Series: Sea Shepherd: Caretta caretta–a limited edition created in collaboration with Sea Shepherd, the international direct-action marine conservation movement founded by Captain Paul Watson in 1977, and iMilani, an Italian company dedicated to sustainable innovation.
Handcrafted in sterling silver and recycled resin, this edition transforms abandoned ghost nets–retrieved from illegal fishing operations in the Mediterranean–into a declaration of love for the oceans and a tangible act of protection. Ghost nets represent one of the most devastating forms of marine pollution. Accounting for up to 70% of macroplastic waste by weight, these drifting traps continue to capture and kill whales, seals, turtles and countless fish long after being discarded.
Through its Ghostnet Campaign, Sea Shepherd’s volunteers locate and remove these invisible threats from the seabed, while the Jairo Med Campaign protects loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta) nesting beaches throughout the Mediterranean. Each rescued hatchling is a small victory against extinction.
The recycled resin–PSV-certified through iMilani’s proprietary process–used for Sea Shepherd: Caretta caretta bears subtle natural variations, reflecting its sustainable, circular design approach. A sterling silver cap band engraved with flowing waves evokes the quiet strength of water, while the chevron clip, also in silver, completes the composition with understated refinement. Gold-filled engraved turtles glide along the body in a silent underwater dance, celebrating the ancient beauty of the Caretta caretta. Crowning the cap is Sea Shepherd’s iconic Jolly Roger–a reminder of an ancient bond, the one that ties humanity to the sea as to its very origin. Within the skull, the silhouettes of a dolphin and a sperm whale emerge, symbolising the inseparable link between human life and the life of the ocean.
Each fountain pen features an 18K rhodium-plated gold nib (EF, F, M, B, Stub 1.1) with cartridge/converter filling, and both fountain pens and rollerballs are individually numbered on the blind cap within an edition of 333 pieces each.
Sea Shepherd: Caretta caretta comes in a custom presentation case adorned with the Sea Shepherd logo and includes a polishing cloth. Every pen is a tangible expression of Montegrappa’s solidarity with the ocean’s defenders.
